Philip Nolen

Orlando actor Philip Nolen — known for such shows as Guys and Dolls, Amadeus and The Big Bang, as well as for his work at Disney — will play the larger-than-life Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, Orlando Shakespeare Theater has announced.

This is far from the first time that Lady Bracknell has been played by a man. Brian Bedford recently wound up a stint playing the imperious dowager on Broadway, and the late Paul Wegman played the role for the old Civic Theatre of Central Florida in 1991.

At Orlando Shakes, Nolen will be joined by Avery Clark (Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice) as Algernon Moncrieff, Mindy Anders (Private Lives, Twelfth Night) as Gwendolyn Fairfax and Deanna Gibson (The 39 Steps) as Cecily Cardew.

The show will run Sept. 14-Oct. 9. Details: orlandoshakes.org.
